In the midst of a disastrous run of form, former Chelsea star Joe Cole has urged the Blues to target West Ham United captain Declan Rice in the upcoming summer transfer window. Notorious for their youth academy, Chelsea have kept a close eye on Rice’s progress, and their interest in him is not a new development. However, with Arsenal also reportedly in the mix for the 22-year-old midfielder, Chelsea may have to pull out all the stops to land their man.
Chelsea’s current form, losing their last six games in a row, is certainly not helping their cause. With no chance of qualifying for Europe, it remains to be seen what kind of summer they can have, but Cole believes that there is already enough talent in the squad to work with. Nonetheless, he believes that Rice could be the missing piece to help Chelsea recover from their slump.
Despite Arsenal being touted as the front-runners for Rice’s signature, he previously expressed his desire to play Champions League football. With Liverpool also said to be keeping a close eye, it remains to be seen if Chelsea can convince him to join a team that is currently in disarray.
However, Cole believes that Rice is a reliable player who will play every minute of every game, alongside the likes of Enzo Fernandez in midfield. Whether Chelsea’s current situation will be enough to convince Rice to move remains to be seen, but Cole’s endorsement of the former Chelsea academy product may provide some hope for Chelsea fans.
