Mayweather, who enjoys the reputation of being one of the most successful and highly-paid boxers in history, has dedicated this event to his longtime assistant, Marikit “Kitchie” Laurico, who passed away suddenly in April. His opponent, John Gotti III, is a professional boxer and MMA fighter.
The 30-year-old comes from a well-known New York background as he is the grandson of the infamous Italian-American gangster John Gotti, better known as ‘Teflon Don’. Gotti was one of the most powerful and dangerous mafia bosses in the United States during the 1980s and 1990s. He was eventually caught and convicted on 14 accounts of conspiracy to commit murder and racketeering in 1992. After being found guilty of the charges, he was given life imprisonment and died behind bars in 2002.
Gotti III has quite an impressive record in the world of professional fighting. Starting off in MMA, he amassed a 5-1 record before making the switch to boxing in 2022, where he has a clean 2-0 record. It will be interesting to see how he fares against Mayweather, who boasts a whopping 50-0 record, having defeated some of the biggest names in boxing such as Manny Pacquiao, Canelo Alvarez and Oscar De La Hoya.
The number of rounds, weight and rules for Mayweather vs Gotti III are yet to be announced, but fans are eagerly awaiting further details on the bout expected at tomorrow’s launch press event.
