Chelsea are reportedly lining up a summer move for Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha as they seek to strengthen their squad ahead of the 2023/24 campaign. The Portugal international has caught the eye of several Premier League clubs with his impressive performances for the Cottagers this season, and it seems Chelsea are among the frontrunners for his signature.
Palhinha, who arrived at Craven Cottage from Sporting CP last year, has been a key player for Fulham this term, earning praise for his defensive skills and ability to contribute going forward. He has been lauded as an “artist” by journalist Josh Bunting, and it’s no surprise that Chelsea are interested in his services.
With N’Golo Kante’s contract set to expire at the end of the season, Palhinha could be the perfect long-term replacement for the Frenchman. The 27-year-old is a natural defensive midfielder and has excelled in that role this season, ranking in the 99th percentile for tackles won from 119 players challenged so far.
However, Palhinha is not just a strong defensive player. He has also shown an ability to score goals, finding the back of the net on four occasions this season. He was named Midfielder of the Year at Sporting, a clear indication of the positive impact he makes on the field.
While Palhinha’s contract with Fulham doesn’t expire for another four years, it seems likely that the London club will receive offers for his services this summer. Chelsea, along with Tottenham and Manchester United, are expected to launch a bid for the Portugal international, and it remains to be seen where he will end up when the transfer window opens.
