Arsenal are reportedly eyeing a move for Villarreal winger Samuel Chukwueze, with the Gunners said to be “going crazy” over his signature. The Nigerian’s impressive performance this season has caught the attention of numerous clubs, but Arsenal are believed to be leading the race for the 23-year-old.
Chukwueze’s style of play has drawn comparisons to the legendary Arjen Robben, with the winger revering the Dutchman as his inspiration. It is easy to see why, as the Nigerian boasts 13 goals and 11 assists for Villarreal this season, with his recent brace against Real Madrid further highlighting his pedigree.
If Chukwueze does trade Spain for north London, he would provide a like-for-like solution to Bukayo Saka, who has posted similar numbers for Arsenal this season. However, the competition for places would surely spur both players on to greater heights, and give Mikel Arteta a nice selection headache.
The Gunners’ campaign has been near-faultless under Arteta, but to continue at this level, the squad must be bolstered. Chukwueze would certainly add another dimension to Arsenal’s already firing front line, and give Premier League full-backs a run for their money. However, his reported price tag of €80m (£71m) may prove to be a stumbling block in any potential deal.
Ultimately, if Arsenal do land Chukwueze, it would be a statement of intent as they seek to do battle with Manchester City for the foreseeable future.
