West Bromwich Albion has had a season of two halves under the management of Steve Bruce and Carlos Corberan. Steve Bruce’s tenure saw them heading towards a relegation battle, but under Carlos Corberan’s fresh leadership, they have again become a prominent member in the promotion race. Nevertheless, one problem persists through it all, the underperformance of winger Grady Diangana.
Although Diangana had made an excellent impression while on loan, his growth has stalled ever since he joined the club permanently. This season, especially, he hasn’t been as effective as his teammates under Carlos Corberan, and for the most part, has been fruitless.
However, it’s disappointing news for the club to see Diangana likely ruled out for the season due to injury. Nonetheless, his skills make him a thorn in any opposition’s side and replacing him could pose a challenge. Yet, the club could find a suitable young replacement in Rico Richards, who has been showing his capabilities in the academy.
Richards could learn greatly from Diangana’s enforced absence, given the teenager seems like a perfect replacement. He has impressed for some time in the U21 setup, with four goals and three assists in only 14 Premier League 2 games, showing his pace and quick feet on the ball.
Last year, journalist Joe Chapman labelled the 19-year-old as “splendid” after a particularly impressive display. Compared to Diangana, who has only managed the same tally across 31 Championship appearances, Richards could be an excellent replacement for the club. While West Brom heavily relies on Diangana’s skills to influence games, Richards could step up and take his chance with both hands.
