Bayern Munich Loanee, Earning £250k per Week Booed Upon Return to Man City

Online fans were irked following the rude reception that Manchester City supporters gave their loaned-out defender, Joao Cancelo, when he returned to the Etihad.

What is the current status between Man City and Joao Cancelo?
The full-back made a surprising move to German giants, Bayern Munich, until the end of the current season, leaving many fans shocked.

Before making his exit in January, Cancelo failed to feature in any of City’s last three matches across competitions. Some media reports speculated that tension between him and Pep Guardiola was the reason behind his sudden winter departure.

Just months after departing the Premier League side, the £250k-per-week star had a golden opportunity to return to England in the Champions League. Unfortunately, the home team clinched a memorable 3-0 victory with goals from Rodri, Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland.

Ironically, Cancelo did not make the starting XI for this match either. However, Thomas Tuchel did introduce him late in the game when all the goals had already been scored.

Bayern Munich has an option to make the loan deal permanent for £61.5m, but after witnessing the fierce reaction to Cancelo, it’s unlikely he’ll return to City.

Footage shared on the BT Sport Twitter feed showed the home crowd raining down boos on Cancelo as he came on for Alphonso Davies. BT commentator, Darren Fletcher, stated that “this is not the kind of reaction a loan player would expect from his own fan base”.

After watching the clip, several fans had their say online. Here are some of the top reactions.

Some even felt that this was the end of Cancelo and City’s partnership.

Others felt that it was unfair to treat him that way.
